Listening for Consistency

  • Home Cinemas can have wide variations in bass response and the close proximity of speakers to listeners can be devastating to focus and envelopment.
  • A properly designed room includes the right number of seats that can fit inside the sweet triangle, away from walls, and where the smoothest bass and best surround speaker balance can be achieved.
  • Solution: Don’t put 10 lbs. of seats in a 5 lb. room or at least be honest about which seats are bad.

One final word in summing up the metrics is that a truly great home cinema has excellent seat-to-seat consistency.  Dialing in the money seat is a must but don’t leave your clients friends and family out.  It is possible in any room, despite room problems, the MLP can be perfected.  It is the sign of a great designer and calibrator to make the whole gang happy.  Listen in each seat when reviewing the metrics.

As you can see, many of the metrics seem to be directly related to the design of a system.  It may be too late to save some systems, but the lessons learned are still valuable.  It’s also important as you may be asked to offer recommendations to upgrade an ailing system.
