Near Field Measurement

  • To perform the Near Field, we move the mic 1 meter or closer to the speaker being measured.
  • The idea is to minimize the room’s acoustics effect on the measurement.
  • We use it as a pseudo-anechoic measurement of the speaker.
  • For tall speakers (many drivers) you can use 2 or 3 mics and use the mux to average the measurement.
  • The most accurate onsite review of a speakers’ performance is the Near Field Speaker Check.
  • If the problem disappears on the Near field check it’s likely the room.
  • If there are strong dips in the response, try maneuvering the microphone’s height and distance from the speaker to smooth the plot.
  • For spot checks, try moving the mike near each driver; you can get a more accurate plot of the function of that driver by moving very close (< 1” or 25 mm).
  • For large speakers you may need to measure woofers independently of the midrange/tweeters due to the great height difference between them.
  • Repeat using the same exact distance for each speaker.
