- The rear wall of a cinema is linked to it's parallel partner the front wall. Some sound quality anomalies can be linked to reflections between them.
- The rear wall plays an additional role though, as the rear portion of the side walls do. It must be primarily diffusive to enhance a sense of envelopment.
- The exception to this recommendation is the central area of the wall opposite the center channel and the screen. Added absorption in this area can be beneficial.
- Absorptive treatment on the rear wall should be limited to no more than 30% of the surface area with 20% being a good target.
- Adding diffusion is highly effective, in other areas of the wall. At the very least these side areas should remain reflective if diffusion is not possible.
- In a room without treatment, adding an absorptive panel in the center of the rear wall can be very beneficial.
